Meaning

Supreme God Krishna spoke

Among the songs of the Sāmaveda, I am the Brihatsāma; among poetic meters, I am the Gāyatri; among months, I am Mārgashirsha; and among seasons, I am the flower-blooming Spring season. (10:35)

Sanskrit

श्रीभगवान् उवाच

बृहत्साम तथा साम्नां गायत्री छन्दसामहम् ।

मासानां मार्गशीर्षोऽहमृतूनां कुसुमाकरः ॥

Word-by-word

बृहत्-साम तथा साम्नाम्, गायत्री छन्दसाम् अहम्,

मासानाम् मार्गशीर्षः अहम्, ॠतूनाम् कुसुम-आकरः।

Commentary

In India, the month of Mārgashirsha falls between November and December. In ancient times the counting of months began from this month. That may be one reason the Lord calls Himself the Month of Mārgashirsha. This is also called Agahana or Agrahāyana.
