Meaning

Sanjaya spoke

In the presence of stalwarts like Bhishma, Drona, and other kings, the Lord directed Arjuna's gaze to the assembled Kurus. (1:25)

Sanskrit

सञ्जय उवाच

भीष्मद्रोणप्रमुखतः सर्वेषां च महीक्षिताम् ।

उवाच पार्थ पश्यैतान्समवेतान्कुरूनिति ॥

Word-by-word

भीष्म-द्रोण-प्र-मुखतः सर्वेषाम् च मही-क्षिताम्

उवाच — पार्थ पश्य एतान् समवेतान् कुरून् इति।

Commentary

Kurus" or "Kauravas" originally refer to individuals tracing their ancestry back to King Kuru. Notably, this lineage encompasses both the Pāndavas and the Dhritarāshtra clan. However, over time, these terms became predominantly associated with the Dhritarāshtra clan, specifically excluding the Pāndavas in common parlance.
